SERIOUSLY RAISES $18 MILLION TO BUILD OUT ITS MOBILE-FIRST ENTERTAINMENT STRATEGY

Series A Led by Northzone Along With Korea Investment Partners, Upfront Ventures, Sunstone Capital and Daher Capital

Venice, California and Helsinki, Finland - August 4, 2015 – Seriously, a mobile entertainment start-up, today announced they have raised $18 million in a Series A round. Northzone, early backers of companies such as Spotify, Trustpilot, and Avito, led the round. Korea Investment Partners, investors in companies including Daum Kakao Corp. and Naver, also participated, along with previous investors Upfront Ventures, Sunstone Capital and Daher Capital. This brings Seriously’s total funding to date to $28 million.

With Seriously launching a trilogy of Best Fiends games, the new funds will be used to build out their production teams and invest in further industry-first marketing programs. Seriously is expanding the Best Fiends brand beyond the mobile game and into a global entertainment franchise.

Seriously is reverse engineering the typical Hollywood approach to create an entertainment franchise with Nordic gaming at the heart of it,” said Bjorn Stray, Partner at Northzone. “We have been impressed by Seriously’s growth and team they have built in Los Angeles and Helsinki, and see extraordinary potential for disruption in the market.”

Seriously launched their first mobile game, Best Fiends, in October 2014, and since then, the game has been downloaded over 15 million times with up to 1.35 million daily active players. The company plans to release the second game in the trilogy later this year.

Treats 25,000 Children for Malaria Through Partnership with Malaria No More

Santa Monica, Calif. – December 29, 2014 – Seriously, a mobile entertainment start-up, today announced the company has donated a total of $50,000 to charity through their ‘Race Against Slime’ competition around its popular Best Fiends mobile game.

From December 13th through 19th, five of YouTube’s biggest stars - PewDiePie, Markiplier, CinnamonToastKen, UberHaxorNova and Kootra – competed in a weeklong no-holds-barred ‘Race Against Slime’. Contestants played Best Fiends in a race to win the right to donate a $50,000 prize pool to charity, with half going to a charity of their choice and half going to Seriously’s charity partner, Malaria No More.

As a result of the competition, CinnamonToastKen finished ahead of the pack, coming in first place and winning $10,000 for Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA; UberHaxorNova finished close behind in second winning $6,000 for A Precious Child; Kootra came in third place winning $4,000 for Make-A-Wish America; and Markiplier and PewDiePie tied finishing in fourth place winning $2,500 each for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Oceana.

“Even though we’re a start-up, it is important to us at Seriously to try and do the right thing in an organic way which is why we have been working with Malaria No More since the launch of Best Fiends,” said Andrew Stalbow, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Seriously. “’Race Against Slime’ was a first of its kind competition for charity with some of the hottest YouTube stars and a great platform to raise money and awareness for some important causes.”

Seriously will donate $25,000 to support the work of Malaria No More and its Power of One campaign. Through the campaign and their partnership with Novartis, a provider of medical healthcare solutions, this will help treat 25,000 children for malaria.

Best Fiends “Race Against Slime”: The First Ever Mobile Game Charity Competition

In the first ever mobile game charity competition, the world’s biggest YouTube stars PewDiePie, Markiplier, CinnamonToastKen, UberHaxorNova and Kootra will compete in a weeklong race of Seriously’s Best Fiends mobile game to benefit charities including Malaria No More and others. The competition will kickoff on Friday December 12th and end on December 19th

Fans can track the progress of the contestants in their weeklong “Race Against Slime” competition by following Best Fiend’s and the YouTube Star’s social and YouTube channels. Contestants will be posting updates on Twitter on their progress and milestones achieved, and interacting with fans, as they play the Best Fiends mobile game and battle it out to win money for their favorite charities. Each contestant will also post a kickoff video on their YouTube channel, announcing their participation in the competition and the charity they are playing to win money for.

A recap of the tournament standings and prize money and all Best Fiends action will be included in PewdiePie and CinnamonToastKen’s Broken Podcast the week of December 22nd.

Seriously will be donating a total of $50,000 to charity through the campaign with half of the prize money being donated to Seriously’s charity partner Malaria No More, and the remaining proceeds going to the winners’ charities of choice. Charities include Oceana, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Make-A-Wish, A Precious Child and Mattel Children’s Hospital. The winner of the competition will be announced on December 19th.

Mobile start-up Seriously reveals first look at
"Best Fiends" property and initial game

Seriously™, a mobile entertainment start-up, today released a first look at its new Best Fiends™ property and the first game designed to be developed into a global franchise. The Best Fiends mobile game is a visually stunning puzzler that ties together timeless storytelling and character development with built-in elements of strategy and skill. Launching today, the Best Fiends website features an introduction to the new property, including the game’s premise, character photos and descriptions, as well as a visual peek into the development of the property. Best Fiends launches worldwide in October and will be free to download with in-app purchase options.

Founded by a team of industry veterans and headed by former Rovio executives Andrew Stalbow and Petri Järvilehto, Seriously brings together a world-class in-house creative studio of mobile gaming and design experts. Together, the team has worked on games that have over two billion downloads at companies such as Natural Motion, RedLynx, Disney, Remedy, Fox, and Rovio.

Seriously has also partnered with some of the industry’s best entertainment talent to build out it global franchise, including music from composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Minion Movie), Pilot Studio a brand and visual development agency (Transformers, Star Wars) and Soren Fleng for the Copenhagen Bombay production of the first Best Fiends animated short (Angry Birds Toons, Subway Surfers).

Best Fiends is the first in a series of games, telling the story of these heroes’ epic journey, and their battle against the voracious Slugs of Mount Boom.

A little update from Seriously

June 26th 2014

As we build out a world class creative team, we are excited to share some news.

Firstly, we’re pleased to announce that Philip Hickey has joined as Vice President, Marketing & Communications. Philip will be responsible for marketing our properties, beginning with our first title later in the summer. Philip joins from Rovio where he led marketing strategy and execution across the company.

We’re also thrilled that Petri Räsänen has joined Seriously as Game Artist. Petri is a talented game and technical artist, and was part of the team at mobile game developer Rocketpack which was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2011.

Additionally, two advisors have joined the Seriously team.

Dan Romanelli brings extensive entertainment franchise and retail experience to Seriously. Dan was Founder and President of Warner Bros Worldwide Consumer Products where he built that division into a business that generated over $50 billion in worldwide retail sales under his leadership. Dan and his team were responsible for the consumer product programs for multiple Warner properties including Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, Batman, Superman and Harry Potter.

On joining the advisory team, Dan said: ‘It takes a blend of hard work and creative inspiration to build a property that can grace the world stage. I’m impressed with the DNA of the Seriously team and excited about the opportunity they have to build mobile first entertainment brands as audiences migrate to smartphones and tablets. I look forward to supporting them.’

Ujjal Kohli brings comprehensive mobile, entrepreneurial and venture capital experience to Seriously. Most recently, Ujjal was CEO and co-founder at Rhythm New Media which sold to BlinkX. Among other roles, Ujjal was also CMO for AirTouch Cellular, which later formed part of Verizon Wireless.

On joining the advisory team, Ujjal said: ‘I admire the company’s entrepreneurial gusto and determination to tackle a very big opportunity, and, having spent the past eight years successfully building a mobile entertainment business myself, hope some of my experience can help the team at Seriously achieve their goals.’

And lastly, we’re pleased to share that Seriously closed a $2.65M ‘Series Seed B’ round of financing which will be invested into content development and further building out the team. The round was led by current investors Sunstone Capital and Upfront Ventures, and adding Daher Capital as a new investor. Seriously’s total seed raise stands at $5M.

Everyone on the founding team has 10+ years of experience on the leading edge of their respective fields. Tommi builds great technology that enables fast content creation and rapid iteration. With a background in triple-A game development, he co-founded Rocket Pack in 2010, which was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2011, where Tommi worked for 2 years.

Serdar is responsible for production. Former Head of Studio at Rovio, he started working in the games industry in 2003 and joined Digital Chocolate as a Lead Game Programmer in 2004.

Samuli Viikinen

Samuli is responsible for level design. He worked on titles such as Max Payne and Alan Wake at Remedy, and most recently worked at Recoil where he led the design for critically acclaimed Rochard and Rock Runners.

Juha Matikainen

GENERAL MANAGER, FINLAND

Juha runs the business operations in Finland. Previously CFO at Grey Area and also currently on the advisory board at TEKES. Juha’s expertise lies in finance, budgeting, HR and operations.

Miguel Fransisco

LEAD CHARACTER & CONCEPT ARTIST

Miguel is responsible for character and concept art. Most recently he led character design on the phenomenally successful Angry Birds brand, designing birds and pigs for titles such as Angry Birds, Bad Piggies and Angry Birds Star Wars.

Johannes Ahvenniemi

GAME PROGRAMMER

Johannes entered the games industry as an indie web game developer with 15+ published titles reaching tens of millions of players. At Rovio he worked as programmer on Angry Birds as well as other titles in development.

With over 30 shipped titles on 10+ platforms Peter has a vast amount of experience leading uncompromising Quality Assurance on games reaching hundreds of millions of downloads. His background includes leading QA teams at Rovio and Digital Chocolate.

Formerly from Rocket Pack (acquired by The Walt Disney Company), Petri has experience on game and concept art for both social and mobile games.
