5 Questions With…Jyri Kuokka
1. Where were you/what did you do before working at Seriously?
Before I began working at Seriously, I was responsible for quality assurance at Rovio on a number of Angry Birds titles as well as Bad Piggies. Early in my career, I worked at the Finnish elevator company KONE and a boutique game shop that sold video games. Surprisingly, however, my background happens to be in human resources.
2. What is your current role at Seriously?
I’m a Level Designer! Every level you play in Best Fiends was designed by someone on our team. As a Level Designer, I take a game mechanic or two (say lights and color bombs), and figure out how they could work together to create fun gameplay, and then build levels that showcase that. The other aspects of my work include developing new mechanics for the game, improving or fixing old levels, looking at how our levels are performing once they’re live, and some mentoring, as well.
3. What’s your favorite part about your job?
The most amazing and rewarding part of my job is being an instrumental part of creating a game that is enjoyed by millions of people around the world.
4. Who is your favorite Fiend or Slug and why?
Somehow, I’m always drawn to JoJo. To me, she comes off as having a positive personality, but she’s also unabashedly fierce and confident. Maybe that’s something I’m working towards.
5. When you are not working at Seriously or playing Best Fiends, what do you enjoy doing?
My free time is usually reserved for making music, cooking, or playing video games. I’ve also recently been getting into illustration more and since buying an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, I’ve found it extremely relaxing. I think my favorite thing of all is sitting on the couch with my girlfriend and riffing on a video game or movie we’re enjoying together. We both absolutely love video games!
